Westchester County residents can now recycle small non-ferrous aluminum items, including used Nespresso coffee capsules, directly in their residential curbside recycling bins. The expansion covers all residents within the county’s Refuse Disposal District through a joint effort between Nespresso, Westchester County, and the Glass Packaging Institute.
Under the new initiative, small aluminum materials will be processed locally at the Department of Environmental Facilities Material Recovery Facility. The updated sorting process allows the district to divert additional small-format metal materials from the local waste stream alongside standard glass, plastic, metal, and carton recyclables.
The program directly serves more than 900,000 residents across the county. Funding and equipment support provided through the partnership help ensure smaller recyclable materials are captured and separated during initial facility sorting rather than ending up in landfill waste or mixed glass streams.
Nespresso Vice President of Operations Melania Luna noted that the partnership aims to capture small metals for reuse across the broader packaging industry. Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins stated that expanding curbside access helps capture valuable resources while keeping additional waste out of landfills.
Scott DeFife, president of the Glass Packaging Institute, explained that smaller metals frequently get mis-sorted during initial processing, making targeted equipment investments essential for proper recovery. The Westchester program expands on similar curbside recycling initiatives previously established in New York City and Jersey City.
