Alt-rock band Deer Tick will perform at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock on June 23. The performance follows the release of their ninth studio album, “Coin-O-Matic,” out now via ATO Records.
The 11-track LP marks the first self-produced record in the band’s more than two-decade career. Recorded at their home studio and engineered by drummer Dennis Ryan, the album features guest appearances from Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin on baritone saxophone and former band member Rob Crowell on organ. The project follows their 2023 release, “Emotional Contracts.”
The band’s current single, “Mary Singletary,” recently reached the top 25 on the AAA radio charts. Ahead of the album’s release, the group also shared the tracks “Dog Years,” “ACI,” and “Everything Born.”
Musically, the self-produced album features a four-piece rock sound that incorporates roots rock, jangle-pop, and heartland-rock anthems. Singer and guitarist John McCauley noted that the album blends personal memory with nuanced fiction, creating a collection of songs that mirrors a country record set in an urban environment.
Thematic material on the album explores the working-class histories of the band’s home state of Rhode Island, drawing inspiration from the Providence mafia underworld of past generations. The album title itself references a cigarette-vending-machine company that served as the headquarters for mobster Raymond Patriarca. Songwriter McCauley stated that the material reflects a certain nostalgia for that specific era.
Individual tracks on the record delve into distinct character studies. The opening track, “Dog Years,” is an intimate folk song inspired by an assisted-living facility near McCauley’s childhood home. The jangle-pop track “ACI” provides a first-person perspective of a getaway driver imprisoned at the Adult Correctional Institutions outside Providence, while “Exit Door” follows an elderly ex-con returning to a changed world.
Guitarist Ian O’Neil handles lead vocals on “Everything Born,” a bittersweet song written for his children that reflects on love and grief. The album closes with “Candy Cigarettes,” a love song that includes subtle allusions to the 1981 Irish hunger strike.
Tickets for the June 23 performance in Woodstock are currently on sale. The band’s broader tour itinerary also includes a stop at Warsaw in Brooklyn on June 9, an appearance at the Newport Folk Festival on July 24, and a show at The Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles on October 9.
