Newburgh gallery to feature co-exhibitions by Kahori Kamiya and Ruben Tomas

“Eternal Ripple” by Kahori Kamiya

GRIT Gallery will host a pair of concurrent exhibitions featuring the work of artist Kahori Kamiya and photographer Ruben Tomas, opening July 18 and running through August 23.

The main gallery will feature “Darling, Stay Close,” an exploration of collective memory and emotional layers by Kamiya. The exhibit includes both oil paintings and sculptural works that center on the word “Darling,” a term the gallery notes can be addressed to a romantic partner, a child, a ghost, or an inner voice.

“You will be welcomed into the gallery by extremely intricate, colorful, and spiritually limitless sculptures created by Kahori Kamiya,” said David Lionheart, GRIT co-curator. “The peaceful yet complex multimedia creations will be surrounded by a majestic conversation carried on between Kamiya and her fearless paintbrush.”

Kamiya’s work often bridges the gap between presence and disappearance, featuring pieces such as “Wishing Star,” an oil on canvas depicting a mother and child, and “Sanctuary,” a womb-like sculpture from her “Go-Shintai” series.

In the Center Gallery, Spanish photographer Ruben Tomas will present “In Between.” Born in Valencia, Tomas focuses on the elusive connection between himself and his surroundings, often capturing inner lives along the surfaces of bodies and eyes in partial shadow. His work has been featured internationally in publications such as L’Officiel HommesElle, and Schon Magazine.

“The paintings open portals into emotional states that hover between presence and disappearance,” the gallery stated in its exhibition announcement.

An opening reception will be held Saturday, July 18, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. GRIT Gallery is located at 115 Broadway in Newburgh and is open to the public on weekends from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
