Safe Harbors of the Hudson’s Ann Street Gallery will present Tales from the Penumbra: Memories of Shadow-and-Light, featuring new works by 2026 fellows Elena Kalkova, Duncan Richards, and Luis Mercedes Winter. The exhibition runs from Sept. 19 through Nov. 22, 2026, showcasing installation, print media, sculpture, assemblage, photography, and poetry.

A public opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. as part of Newburgh Open Studios. The gallery will also host artist talks with the fellows on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m.

The Ann Street Gallery Emerging Artist Fellowship program provides a platform for early-career and under-recognized artists in Newburgh and the Hudson Valley, emphasizing support for artists from historically marginalized communities. Gallery Director Alison McNulty leads the six-month program, which offers mentorship, professional development, studio visits, and group trips to regional art institutions.

A jury of arts community members and program alumni selected the three fellows following an annual open call. Each fellow receives a $2,000 materials allowance, shared onsite studio space, and individual guidance focused on career goals.

Fellow Elena Kalkova, a NYSCA Grant recipient with degrees from the School of Visual Arts and Rhode Island School of Design, uses conceptual sculpture and installation to address state censorship and memory. Interdisciplinary artist Duncan Richards combines contemporary art with traditional folk magic using sculptural, multimedia, and mediumistic techniques. Photographer and poet Luis Mercedes Winter uses his work to reinterpret traditional narratives against Hudson Valley landscapes.

Ann Street Gallery is located at 104 Ann Street in Newburgh. The free exhibition is open to the public Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. during Newburgh Open Studios on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27.
