The Newburgh-based nonprofit organization Safe Harbors of the Hudson has announced the return of its annual Salsa Under the Stars event. The outdoor program will take place on Saturday, July 18, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Safe Harbors Green, located at 97 Broadway at the corner of Liberty Street.
The event is free to the public and offers bilingual dance lessons in both English and Spanish for all age groups and experience levels. Local dance instructor Maritza Calderon-Caballero and musician Daniel Villegas will host the evening, featuring music provided by DJ Rene Campos of DMU Music. In addition to the instructional sessions, the schedule includes dance contests with prizes and local food trucks.
This year’s itinerary introduces a dedicated segment focused on Bomba, a traditional Puerto Rican song, dance, and drumming rhythm developed by enslaved West Africans and their descendants. Members of Hudson Valley Bomba will guide attendees through a practical dance and drumming lesson. Instructors will also present historical details regarding the art form and its structural influence on contemporary Latin musicians.
Funding for Safe Harbors’ performing arts and community programming is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with backing from the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. The specific dance event is sponsored by Affinity by Molina Healthcare, while the annual stewardship of the green space receives financial support from Resorts World Gives.
Safe Harbors of the Hudson was established in 2000 as a housing and arts nonprofit to support the continuing revitalization of Newburgh. The organization manages the Cornerstone Residence for supportive housing, the Ann Street Gallery, Safe Harbors Green, and the historic Ritz Theater, which is undergoing a multi-phase redevelopment into a modern performance venue.
