Safe Harbors of the Hudson’s Ann Street Gallery is currently hosting its summer exhibition, Catching Fire: resilient alchemies in a burning world, which runs through Saturday, August 29, 2026. The group exhibition opened in June and was featured as part of the regional Upstate Art Weekend lineup.

Curated by Gallery Director Alison McNulty, the collection brings together nine artists whose work engages fire as a volatile force and regenerative catalyst. The featured creators include Hudson Valley and New York City artists Emil Alzamora, Marcy Chevali, Daniel Giordano, Shanti Grumbine, Alison Kudlow, David Licata, Processing Collapse, and Zachary Skinner. The exhibition also features the posthumous work of celebrated Newburgh artist Gerardo Castro.

The displayed works span multiple disciplines, including sculpture, installation, painting, sound, photography, and works on paper. The individual pieces explore the structural and adaptive transformations caused by heat, pressure, and combustion. The artistic narratives intersect with topics concerning politics, material culture, ecology, and the environment.

Several participating artists utilize flame and heat directly as a tool for material manipulation. Other featured creators use their chosen mediums to document and imagine the releasing and healing potential of burning. The resulting imagery looks at creative alchemy through both literal and metaphorical lenses during an era marked by ecological precarity and political volatility.

Ann Street Gallery is located at 104 Ann Street in Newburgh. The exhibition is free and open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., with additional viewing times available by appointment. Exhibition details and updates regarding ongoing programming are available on the gallery website and Instagram account.

Funding for the exhibition is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with support from the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Additional organizational support comes from the Cowles Charitable Trust, Dominican Sisters of Hope Ministry Fund, M&T Charitable Foundation, and individual donors.
