A new collaborative project aimed at fostering food sustainability and local cooperation will begin May 24 with a community-wide planting event.
The initiative, titled “Grow ToGather,” is a joint effort between the Juniper Cultural Center, Flowering Sun Ecology Center, and the Ellenville Seventh-day Adventist Church. Organizers plan to transform the grounds of the church and cultural center into a permanent neighborhood garden and educational hub.
The launch event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is open to the public, including families and children. Volunteers will spend the day constructing raised garden beds, planting herbs and vegetables, and establishing native trees along the property’s perimeter. The project also includes the installation of a three-stage composting system.
“Grow ToGather represents a vision for community resilience, local food access, and collective action — one seed at a time,” organizers said in a statement.
The project seeks to raise $1,000 in support of the installation and is currently accepting donations of specific gardening items listed on its website. No prior gardening experience is required for those wishing to volunteer.
Participants are encouraged to bring water and wear comfortable outdoor clothing. A vegetarian potluck meal will be shared during the day, and attendees are asked to bring their own reusable dishware to align with the project’s focus on environmental stewardship.
