Kaatsbaan Cultural Park will host a preview of the original Broadway-bound play “Baldwin et Lucien” on April 18, featuring a surrealist exploration of the life of author James Baldwin.
The production, written by playwright and actor R. Jahan, is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the park’s 120 Broadway location. Admission is free to the public with a required reservation.
Set in the winter of 1952 in a secluded Swiss chalet, the drama imagines an intimate period between a young Baldwin and his lover, Lucien Happersberger. The play incorporates music and moves between memory and fantasy to address themes of race, exile, queer love, and the creative process.
“The play explores race, exile, queer love, language barriers, artistic creation, and the haunting presence of the past,” the organization said in a statement.
Jahan, an American Musical and Dramatic Academy graduate, is known for works that center on racial complexity and queer identity through the lens of psychological surrealism.
The evening will begin with a 6 p.m. reception in the Lobby Gallery for audience members, cast, and crew. A talkback session with the production team will follow the performance to discuss the play’s development and historical context.
Kaatsbaan Cultural Park serves as a Hudson Valley destination for dance, theater, and multidisciplinary arts. Additional information regarding tickets and upcoming 2026 programming is available through the park’s website.
