afe Harbors of the Hudson will present its spring group exhibition, (your) body is a porous language : (our) embodied connections, at Ann Street Gallery from April 11 through May 31.
Curated by poet and performance artist Edwin Torres, the exhibition brings together a multidisciplinary group of artists exploring themes of language, connection, and the body. A public opening reception is scheduled for April 11 from 4 to 6 p.m.
The exhibition features work by Elizabeth Castagna, Todd Colby, Matthew Friday, Renee Gladman, Charmaine Lee and Gryphon Rue, Shanzhai Lyric, Erika Mahr, Tamalyn Miller, Gabriela Salazar, Sasha Stiles, Torres, Yara Travieso, Cecilia Vicuña, Millicent Young, and Zina Zinchenko.
According to gallery director Alison McNulty, Torres’ role as curator builds on his longstanding engagement with visual and performance art. The exhibition expands his interest in space, language, and materiality into a gallery setting while inviting audiences to explore connections across disciplines.
The show examines what Torres describes as “language-making,” incorporating installation, sculpture, painting, sound, movement, and poetry to explore the boundaries between mind, body, and environment. Works in the exhibition aim to highlight how artistic expression can both define and dissolve connections across physical and conceptual spaces.
“Our bodies are liquid vibrational forces that mirror the patterns of our human porosity,” Torres said. “Across the many voices and forms gathered, this exhibit proposes how language-making can shape our willingness to interrogate a continually evolving world.”
Additional programming will accompany the exhibition, including a poetry reading on April 26 featuring Carolina Abreu, Brenda Coultas, and Torres, along with dance and musical performances. An artist talk moderated by Torres with Mónica de la Torre and Gladman is scheduled for May 23. Additional events and a workshop will be announced.
Located at 104 Ann St., Ann Street Gallery is open free to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m., with additional hours available by appointment.
