The New Paltz Fire Station has become the first fire station in New York State to achieve net-zero—or near net-zero—energy performance following the installation of a rooftop solar array. The all-electric, ultra-efficient facility is being hailed as a model for climate-forward public buildings.
“This facility reinforces our commitment to exemplary emergency service and environmental responsibility,” said former Fire Chief Cory Wirthmann. “We are proud to demonstrate leadership in both safety and sustainability.”
Mayor Tim Rogers said the project reflects the town’s dedication to cost-effective, energy-efficient construction while addressing the global climate crisis. “This required additional effort and patience to make sure we assembled strong architectural, engineering, and construction teams,” Rogers said. “To reach our goals, we are proud to share that this building did not cost more, as some consultants had originally suggested. This state-of-the-art building should make our green- and taxpayer-minded community proud.”

The $8 million project was funded in part by the NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program through the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, following damage caused by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Sustainability was prioritized from the outset, and Alfandre Architecture was selected for its expertise in green, fossil-fuel-free design.
The facility features a 10-vehicle, drive-through apparatus bay with advanced exhaust capture, radiant floor heating, fast-operating overhead doors, a decontamination zone, and a mezzanine with dedicated training and quartermaster areas. High-performance systems include insulated concrete form walls, a super-insulated roof, energy recovery ventilation, and all-electric heat pumps for heating and cooling.
Completed in 2022, the station met the New York State All-Electric Buildings Act well ahead of the 2026 mandate and aligns with the AIA 2030 Commitment for carbon-neutral operations. With its solar array now active, the fire station showcases the potential of community vision, innovation, and sustainable design.
