The Bannerman Castle Trust and the Skyla Schreter Dance Company will present The Flock: Jo’s Dream, an immersive tour experience on Bannerman Island. The event takes place over one weekend on Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4, with tour boat departures scheduled for 4:30 p.m. both days.
Created by choreographer and director Skyla Schreter, The Flock is a large-scale dance and film project based on Richard Bach’s 1970 novel Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The project’s fifth chapter, Jo’s Dream, will be filmed on Bannerman Island in September 2026, with a planned film premiere in spring 2027 as part of a larger full-length dance work.
Visitors will access the event by taking a 25-minute boat ride aboard the Estuary Steward, departing from the Beacon Dock at 2 Red Flynn Drive. Upon arrival, attendees will have an hour and a half to navigate the island using an illustrated map designed by artist Chris Ams.
The self-guided experience features sound and light installations created by SSD creative director Aaron Sanders at various waypoints across the island. Rather than watching a live dance or theater performance, visitors will move through the setting accompanied by recorded monologues and music from the larger dance-film work.
The story follows Jo, a young seagull who leaves her community and its traditions to pursue flight as an art form. The event is funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts in partnership with the Bannerman Castle Trust.
