Senate House State Historic Site has announced the return of its John Vanderlyn themed walking tours in Uptown Kingston. The one-hour guided tours explore the life and legacy of the neoclassical artist across locations connected to his family and artistic career.
Remaining tour dates for the season include Sept. 19, Oct. 10, and Oct. 15. Each session runs from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., covering approximately one mile of walking distance across local terrain.
Participants will meet at 296 Fair Street in the driveway near the Robert Loughran House. The outdoor tours are weather dependent and free to attend, though advance reservations are required by phone or email.
Senate House State Historic Site holds the largest collection of Vanderlyn’s work globally, though his paintings are also displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Following the tour, visitors can view the museum’s permanent exhibit, “Vanderlyn the Artist,” which features original works, sketches, and historic tools.
Museum admission is $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors, and free for children ages 12 and under. Tickets include entry to the Vanderlyn exhibit, two additional galleries, and a guided tour of the original Senate House building where the New York State Senate first met in 1777.
