The Wolf Conservation Center announced it has broken ground on a major transformation of its 32-acre campus in South Salem, New York. The construction project will expand the sanctuary’s infrastructure for conservation education, public programming, and animal care facilities.
Key project elements include the construction of the new Martha Hunt Handler and Family Education Center, which will house a multimedia classroom, interactive exhibits, a welcome center, and a gift shop. The project also features a new outdoor amphitheater, an enhanced enclosure for ambassador wolves, ADA-accessible pathways, and visitor rest areas across the preserve.
Animal care and visitor infrastructure updates include a new climate-controlled animal care building with specialized food storage to support the center’s whole-carcass diet program. The expansion also adds year-round camping dens to provide overnight accommodations for guests staying on site.
Construction is expected to last 14 months, with the upgraded campus scheduled to open by January 2028. The transformation is funded through private donations and state grant programs, including support from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Empire State Development, and the NY State Environmental Protection Fund.
The Wolf Conservation Center is a non-profit environmental organization based in South Salem, New York. Situated on a private nature preserve near New York City, the sanctuary focuses on wild wolf recovery programs, scientific research, and public education.
