New Rochelle educators participated in a hands-on marine ecology workshop at Five Islands Park on September 12, 2026. The Long Island Sound Mentor Teacher Workshop provided local teachers with field-based activities to use in their classrooms.
During the session, participants collected and classified marine organisms and kayaked in Echo Bay. The program was designed to show educators how to use the local shoreline as a practical resource for place-based science education.
Funding for the program was provided by New York Sea Grant and the Long Island Sound Partnership. The initiative was held in collaboration with the Energy Justice Law & Policy Center New Rochelle Eco-Ambassadors program.
Workshop facilitators Carmen Glenn and Jonathan La Rosa, both teachers at New Rochelle High School, led the outdoor activities. Glenn noted that experiencing the ecosystem up close allows teachers to better guide student discovery, while La Rosa emphasized that local environments like New Rochelle provide complete ecological study opportunities without requiring long-distance trips.
Raya Salter, founder and executive director of the Energy Justice Law & Policy Center, highlighted that the event builds on the summer Eco-Ambassadors high school program. Community partners plan to continue expanding shoreline educational opportunities at the park as plans advance for a future Coastal Education & Resilience Center.
