The Senate House State Historic Site in Kingston has announced a special event titled “Let Freedom Ring!” to commemorate 250 years of American independence. The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the historic site grounds.
A featured presentation will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a reading of the Declaration of Independence. Community members will then read historical speeches from figures including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Harvey Milk. These speeches will explore how each speaker applied the words of the Declaration of Independence to their respective eras.
Activities on the grounds will feature historical reenactors from the 1st and 3rd Ulster Militias. The day will also include live musical performances by the Ancient Order of Hibernians Pipe Band and performer Mark Rust. Visitors can additionally view demonstrations on hearthside cooking and participate in a take-home craft.
Guided tours will be available for the historic Senate House, which served as the first meeting place of the New York State Senate in 1777. The 18th-century structure was originally the home of the Van Gaasbeek family.
The site museum building will open two brand new exhibits that were unveiled this year. The first exhibit, “Revolution Comes to Kingston,” uses original objects, documents, and interactive elements to tell the story of the American Revolution through the perspective of local inhabitants. The second exhibit, “Vanderlyn the Artist,” focuses on the life and work of 19th-century neoclassical artist and Kingston native John Vanderlyn.
The outdoor activities and the featured speech presentation are free for all attendees. Admission to the museum and the inside of the historic house costs $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for seniors. Children aged 12 and under can enter the indoor spaces for free.
