The Afghan Whigs will celebrate four decades as one of alternative rock’s most distinctive bands with a 40th anniversary North American tour, opening April 25 at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, with Mercury Rev supporting on all dates.
Formed in Cincinnati in 1986, The Afghan Whigs carved out a singular place in the alternative rock landscape by defying genre expectations, blending soul, R&B and classic pop influences with rock at a time when flannel and grunge dominated the scene. Known as much for their sharp suits as their emotional intensity, the band stood apart for drawing inspiration from artists like Marvin Gaye as readily as from guitar-driven rock traditions.
After disbanding in 2001, the group reunited in 2012 for a widely acclaimed return that included sold-out shows and major festival appearances worldwide. Since then, the band has continued to expand its legacy, releasing three critically praised albums in the 21st century: Do to the Beast (2014), In Spades (2017) and How Do You Burn? (2022).
The 2026 anniversary tour will span 20 dates across North America, beginning in Woodstock and concluding May 24 at Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown, California. Tickets for all performances go on sale Friday, Jan. 23.
“Forty years later, I still get to do the thing I love the most,” band co-founder Greg Dulli said in a statement. “Writing songs and performing them with my friends all over the world. I truly have to pinch myself.”
Joining The Afghan Whigs throughout the tour is Mercury Rev, the Buffalo, New York–formed band celebrated for its continually evolving sound and psychedelic textures. In 2026, Mercury Rev is also marking the 25th anniversary of its acclaimed album All Is Dream, supported by a global tour and a recently released double-vinyl reissue featuring b-sides and rarities.
The Afghan Whigs recently released two new cover singles, “Fake Like” and “Downtown,” in December, signaling continued creative momentum. The band is also planning to release a new album in 2026, with further details expected to be announced in the coming months.
