Kaatsbaan Cultural Park (120 Broadway, Tivoli, NY 12583) will host an open rehearsal of TRIBE’s latest multidisciplinary work-in-progress, Marks of RED, on Thursday, October 30 at 6:00 PM. The event offers audiences a rare opportunity to witness the creative process behind a new work by award-winning choreographer Shamel Pitts and his Brooklyn-based arts collective, TRIBE. Admission is free with advance reservation.

Blending dance, theater, and visual art, Marks of RED is a work of magical realism narrated by and centered on the experiences of six women. The piece continues Pitts’s ongoing exploration of Black embodiment, aliveness, and human connection, drawing inspiration from Afrofuturism and the metaphoric concept of the “womb space.” Through movement and image, the work meditates on how memory shapes our perceptions of the body, reality, and imagination.

The production features scenic design by Mimi Lien, projection and lighting design by Lucca Del Carlo, and production by the TRIBE arts collective. As the fourth installment in Pitts’s acclaimed RED Series, Marks of RED deepens his investigation into the multiplicity and complexity of self-expression. The piece examines themes of regeneration, implosion, rupture, and transformation, offering a layered and immersive experience for audiences.

This open rehearsal is part of Kaatsbaan’s New Work Preview series, an initiative that allows artists in residence to share their creative process with the public at any stage of development. The program is designed to foster dialogue between artists and audiences, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how performance works evolve before their premieres.

“New Work Previews invite audiences to step into the creative laboratory,” Kaatsbaan organizers note. “They allow artists to experiment, refine, and reflect in real time, while audiences experience the thrill of discovery.”
