Free outdoor programs in August at Staatsburgh State Historic Site

From photographic scavenger hunts in a stunning landscape along the Hudson River, to village walking tours, and landscape and history hikes – Staatsburgh has several offerings this month that will get you and your family learning about history out-of- doors, and they are all free!

For adults and history buffs

The Staatsburg Village Walking Tour explores the estate’s close relationship with the nearby village and its connection to the Mills family. Follow a local guide who will discuss historic buildings and highlight hidden locations in the village that demonstrate Staatsburg’s vibrant past and the legacy of the Mills Family beyond the estate walls. Staatsburg Village Walking Tour will be held on August 8,16 & 23 at 10:00am.

The guided landscape walk of Staatsburgh’s grounds, entitled, What You See… and What You Don’t See, shows how Staatsburgh’s landscape architect designed a glorious setting to showcase the good life in the Gilded Age, while deliberately using landscape elements to hide the technology and labor that made a turn-of-the-century estate run. What You See… and What You Don’t See will be held on August 9 & 29 at 10:00am.

Have you ever wondered what some of the ruins within Mills and Norrie State Parks might be?  The guided hike, History Hidden in the Woods, will lead visitors through the park, exploring the history of three historic estates: from Staatsburgh’s founding as a gentleman’s farm in the 1700’s to the development of The Point and Stonehurst estates in the 19th century. History Hidden in the Woods will be held August 10, 22 &31 at 10:00am.

All these programs are free but require advanced reservations. To reserve your spot, visit: www.Bookeo.com/StaatsburghSHS.

Perfect for Child & Family groups and all outdoor lovers

Visit the park any day in August and take part in our Photographic Scavenger Hunt. A phone with a camera and some walking shoes are all that’s needed to explore the grounds and complete ten riddles on a loop through Staatsburgh’s beautiful landscape along the Hudson River. All ages are invited to participate – play solo or with a group. Learn about some of the highlights of the historic grounds around the mansion while having fun! You can picnic on the grounds or visit

the Gilded Age mansion for activities too while here.  Thanks to Stewart’s Shops, participants who complete the hunt can also win a free ice cream cone while supplies last. Staatsburgh’s grounds and Mills State Park are open every day from sunrise to sunset. To download a clue sheet, visit: https://millsfriends.org/virtual/letsgo-outside.

Staatsburgh’s 79-room mansion overlooking the Hudson River is in the hamlet of Staatsburg, between Hyde Park and Rhinebeck. A time capsule of the Gilded Age, Staatsburgh retains its original furnishings and opulent décor. The historic estate grounds surrounding the mansion, now Ogden Mills & Ruth Livingston Mills Memorial State Park, offer scenic walking paths as well as woodland trails.

Staatsburgh State Historic Site is open for guided mansion tours by reservation, Thursdays through Sundays. To attend a mansion tour, please make advance reservations on www.Bookeo.com/StaatsburghSHS; admission is charged upon arrival. Visitors may also enjoy a picnic or stroll by the Hudson River, or a hike along the woodland trails in adjacent Mills Memorial State Park.
