Cocktails and Collections at the Crawford House: “Downing Park, a Family Haven” with Karen Eberle-McCarthy and Mary McTamaney, who will walk us through memories and photos of Newburgh’s Downing Park during the 1950s. Come and enjoy an evening with us while sipping on a cocktail or mocktail. Light refreshments will be served. This lecture is free to the public, though a donation is requested. Newburgh Historical Society Archive Workshop: “The Art of 18th and 19th Century Writing”
Join paleographer Jeff Doolittle and calligrapher Marjorie Politi and explore the beauty of handwriting during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We will use materials from the Newburgh Historical Society archive to demonstrate the production of written documents and the evolution of handwriting styles over time. Participants will also have an opportunity to learn and practice nineteenth-century cursive. $15 materials fee, payable on the day of, though Historical Society members can attend for free. Opening Day at Crawford House
We will be opening our new 2025 exhibit focusing on Downing Park in the 1950s as captured by photographer Louis McTamaney. Dozens of never-before-seen images will be on display, showing the grandeur and beauty of our beloved park. Our mobile scanning station will also be open (1-3 pm), so if you have any photos, slides or negatives of Newburgh, bring them to us and we will scan them for you for free. Help us preserve the history of Newburgh and expand our archive at the same time!
